I'm an internet junkie that is obsessed with books. I own more than I will ever read in this lifetime and yet I'm still compelled
to buy more. I read mostly romance (mild to completely smutty), YA and urban fantasy.
This is Christmas read #2 for me this season and this is also the first Debbie Macomber book I've ever read. I never had much interest in her books, but this one is set partly in Alaska and I couldn't resist.
So, much like my last Christmas read, the hero of this book is estranged from his mother. Finn kind of rubbed me the wrong way right off the bat, because I wanted to tell him to get over his mommy-issues already. Then in the latter half of the book he pissed me off by flat-out telling the heroine, Carrie, that he didn't love her (and some other douchey things as well) for no apparent reason other than the fact that he was a bit of a coward and couldn't get over the aforementioned mommy issues.
I actually rather liked Carrie at first, but it bothered me that she didn't ever get angry at Finn. It didn't feel real to me. She knew he was lying when he said he didn't love her, but she never got angry. He acted like an ass, she should've been a little angry. Then when he showed up at the end, he didn't apologize for being an idiot and she didn't care. She was just glad that he was back.
On the bright side, the beginning of the book was pretty fun and I loved Hennessey (the dog) and Sawyer (Finn's bestie) and I was pretty invested in the story initially. The Alaskan setting was lovely and made me want to see the Northern Lights.
Overall: strong start + weak plot conflict + not-so-great ending = No warm fuzzy Christmas feels for me.
