Tackling Mt. TBR

I'm an internet junkie that is obsessed with books. I own more than I will ever read in this lifetime and yet I'm still compelled
to buy more. I read mostly romance (mild to completely smutty), YA and urban fantasy.

How My Summer Went Up in Flames

How My Summer Went Up in Flames - Jennifer Salvato Doktorski

I have somewhat mixed feelings about this one.

First off the good: I love the whole road trip thing. I think the author did a great job of making me feel like I was right there in the car with them and seeing the country. (I actually did take a road trip when I was younger to some of the same places that were mentioned in the book, so it brought back some happy memories for me.) I liked the humor in the book and also the secondary characters. All three of the guys: Logan, Spencer and Matty were great. I was also a fan of Rosie's family and Avery.

The major downside for me was Rosie herself. She's the main character and unfortunately not entirely likable. She was occasionally funny, but mostly annoying. She openly describes herself as impulsive, but I think she needs to tack on foolish to her description. She was bratty for a good portion of the book and I don't really get why every guy in this book was interested in her as she wasn't all that great and it annoyed me how her feelings seemed to bounce from one of the guys to another depending on who was doing more for her at any given moment.

In the end she did redeem herself somewhat by realizing that the world doesn't revolve around her, but I honestly don't know how she got there. I observed her on the road trip and honestly her attitude change at the end seemed to come out of nowhere. The reader was told that she had changed over the course of the trip but we never really saw it happening.

Overall, I think this is a decent read, especially for summer. If you can get past Rosie there is a lot of good here. I would definitely give the author another try.
