I'm an internet junkie that is obsessed with books. I own more than I will ever read in this lifetime and yet I'm still compelled
to buy more. I read mostly romance (mild to completely smutty), YA and urban fantasy.
This book started out really well. I was completely entertained by Zoe and her coworkers at Underground Publishing where they are working to create a travel guide to NYC for an assortment of paranormal creatures referred to as the coterie. The death goddess and water sprite were particular favorites of mine.
The book initially does a great job of setting up the world. We learn about many of the various coterie and get to see how they manage to stay hidden in plain sight on the streets of New York, plus we get little excerpts of the guide book which I thought were really amusing and well-done.
That being said, I feel the book suffered from some pacing issues and the latter third of the book felt a bit rushed. I don't think certain elements were explained very well and there were times when it got a bit contrived. There was also a continuity error towards the end that bugged me a bit.
Overall, I think this series has a lot of potential and I will probably pick up The Shambling Guide to New Orleans if and when it turns up. If you love urban fantasy and are looking for something a bit different, this would probably be a good choice.
