Tackling Mt. TBR

I'm an internet junkie that is obsessed with books. I own more than I will ever read in this lifetime and yet I'm still compelled
to buy more. I read mostly romance (mild to completely smutty), YA and urban fantasy.

How to Repair a Mechanical Heart [Review]

How to Repair a Mechanical Heart - J.C. Lillis

This book was utterly adorbs. I'm officially an Abandon shipper!

From the moment I started reading I was thoroughly entertained until the very end. The book revolves around Brandon. He's struggling with reconciling his up-bringing in the Catholic church with being an out and proud teen. He's a vlogger (along with his friend, Abel) in the Castaway Planet fandom. And they are taking the summer to travel to various Castaway Planet cons.

I absolutely loved all the fandom stuff. While I'm no longer involved in any fandoms, I used to spend hours reading fanfics, making icons, and squeeing over spoilers. I thought all the fandom squee and flailing was really well done. I mean, OMG guys, I can't even.

Now, I realize, I may be giving the impression that this book is all fluff, but it isn't really. I thought Brandon's struggles with being gay and being Catholic were really well done. Especially as he is 18 and at an age where he is really trying to figure out what he believes and who he is going to be in life. I also thought his parents were well done. Not at all the typical religious parents in coming out stories that start screaming at their kid and calling him a sinner. They were just parents that had strong beliefs and loved their son and ultimately wanted what was best for him, even if they don't really understand what that is.

I took a half star off because of one small issue, which I won't mention because I don't want to spoil anyone.

Overall, this was a completely adorable read. I'm not sure if this book is marketed as YA, but it definitely had that vibe for me. It was a really entertaining, sweet read and the best part of all was that it was free a while back, so you may already have it hidden away somewhere.
